Ahem-Going right now to get my PS3 for Father's Day

I'm going right now to get a PS3 as my father's day gift...I have an HD DVD player, so that means no more worries about formats when trying to buy HD material.

Only issue now is I only have 2 HDMI inputs which are being used by my HD DVR and HD DVD player...guess I'll use components for the HD DVR since I need HDMI for 1080P out of BluRay and for upconversion out of the HD DVD player.

BTW...Whoo Hoo! I'm pretty excited about this.

Make sure you upgrade the firmware on it first. Also I would consider the purchase of a BR remote to go with it. The controller stinks and the work around remote solution isn't that great IMHO.

Your universal remote won't operate it so those are your 3 options.

I'll probably be getting one next month. I'm not happy about the remote control situation but I'll deal with it. Hopefully something else will become available.

I don't see how. It doesn't offer any IR solution at all. The platform was built on BT as a centerpiece. The only solution is the work around or the IMHO well done BT remote. You don't need to buy one but I highly suggest it.

Well...things changed once I got there. I had the PS3 in the cart with the remote, but I went to buy it and the extra warranty was $99 for only 2 years.

HMMM...now I used to not buy warranties, but recently with new technology I have been buying them and actually using them. My HD DVD player was replaced from a gen1 open box to a gen2 in the box because of an issue. So I'm all for it now.

Anyway...they had a new Panasonic Blu Ray, DMP-BD10Aa for the same price that came with 5 bluray movies in the box (ones I wanted), had it's own remote, and had a 4 year warranty for $79.

Since I'm not doing any gaming that isn't Gamecube, I went with the Panasonic for cheaper overall with 5 free movies.

I have a 30 day return policy, so let me know if this player has a bad rep etc. since I did this on the fly.

Right now I'm watching Ghost Rider and it looks just as excellent as my HD DVD player ( I have a 65" Mits DLP 1080P).

Anyway...really happy now...no more format war for me!

You did good. My only worry would be the BDP10a and Blu Ray Java Profile 1.1. It's not compliant so the newest extra features coming won't work. If that's of no concern, I wouldn't worry.

The new Sony BDP 300 is supposedly according to Sony BDJ 1.1 profile compliant and it has the same audio output options as the BDP10a. That would be the other option worth considering.

What movies did you get? IF you need any suggestions just let us or me know. I went on a frenzy after I bought the PS3.

Always looking for recommendations...let me have 'em.

With the player I got Pirates 1&2, Fantastic 4, Crash, and Transporter. I've seen them all, but I was going to buy both Pirates anyway, I liked transporter, and my son is a huge fan of fantastic 4. I've seen crash-maybe good trade material or Karma material.

I bought Ghost Rider (hadn't seen it but wanted to) and I bought Terminator 2. I have Terminator 3 on HD DVD...love that series.

What cool new features will I be missing? Can it be upgraded to accept these?

I don't have an HDMI receiver so I'm using Optical to my receiver...how come it doesn't automatically come up on my receiver as DTS etc like my HD DVD player does? Maybe a setting?

It remains to be seen what new features are coming but play around a bit with the Liars Dice aspect of POTC.

The BDP10a can't be upgraded. The Sony will. Anything made after Oct 07 will be upgraded or have it. It's whether these special features are worth it or not. They will soon be like anything else on the current releases.
Does your current receiver accept 5.1 or 7.1 analog ins? If so then you are missing out on PCM, Dolby True HD and DTS HD(not to be confused with DTS MA).
Toshiba players output DTS via Coax or optical. This is a Toshiba thing. BR is different.

It isn't setting but rather the nature of the player you bought. I don't know of any BR player that outputs only DTS like the Toshibas do.

    Recommendations for titles:
    POTC and POTC2
The Queen - if you are into that
Apocalypto - if you like that type of genre. It's definitely a show off disc in terms of how superior HD is to DVD.
Casino Royale - a must own
Crank - for the PQ/AQ - the movie is a hit or miss
    The Prestige
    Rocky Balboa
    Deja Vu
    Hellboy
    Blackhawk Down
    Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut
    Monster House

There's a few more I'm missing but that should get you started.

I'm with you Shane, totally worried about loosing the house when we go Blu. Nikki and I were at Fry's yesterday and her eyes always pop out of her head when she looks at blu titles compared to HD. I am happy with titles from both camps but I want to be able to have them all ( not all of them, but all of the ones I want)

Easy, someone releases an IR receiver that outputs BT commands to the PS3. Or, since Logitech already has an "xbox" branded remote, they do a PS3 branded one. Who knows. Totally doable though.

BTW...so my wife and I are talking about the player at dinner after we bought it and she asks what tv we're going to hook it up to.

Me: The HDTV, it's the only one it will display HD on.

Her: Well what are you going to do with the HD DVD player? Move it to another tv?

Me: No, we have to keep it on the HDTV since it's the only one it will display HD on. We got a BluRay since there are movies that come out only on one of the formats and we have both now.

Her: You mean we bought it just because there are movies we can't see on the HD DVD? Doesn't that seem excessive?

Me: I thought you knew I was being excessive.

The game controller works fine for me. I usually have one laying around anyway, and it does all I need it to do.

Yeah, I guess that's a safer response than, "Excessive? 10 frackin pairs of black shoes. That's excessive."
