I don't agree with this list but here goes:

    1. The Matrix
    2. Battlestar Galatica - TV Show
    3. Blade Runner
    4. X-Files - TV Show
    5. Star Trek: Wrath of Khan
    6. Brazil
    7. ET
    8. Star Trek TNG TV Show
    9. Aliens
    10. John Carpenter's The Thing
    11. Lost - TV Show
    12. Back to the Future
    13. Terminator/Terminator 2
    14. Children of Men
    15. Firefly/Serenity
    16. Total Recall
    17. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    18. Heroes - TV Show
    19. Starship Troopers
    20. Star Wars: Clone Wars

Personally I think it's criminal that Dark City was omitted. And I'll say it again I prefer The Thirteenth Floor to the Matrix.

    Wasn't it the Thirteenth Floor?

Yeah, that seems like a few biggies and then fill in the gaps with what was new and didn't suck. BAD list. Dark City and 13th Floor both should be on there.

  5. Shane

Ooops yes. The 13th floor

    Not a bad list but...

WTF? They must be kidding? Give me Donnie Darko over Eternal Sunshine anytime

    1. The Matrix

Not really but the cool Special effects raised the level and it was popular so I can live with it.

    2. Battlestar Galatica - TV Show

The new one is excellent and this is a good choice.

    3. Blade Runner

Which one? Doesn't really matter because all cuts are better then most of what is out there.

    4. X-Files - TV Show

I did not care for it and would not put it on the list but there are people out there that are just as bad as Trekies.

    5. Star Trek: Wrath of Khan

Good solid entry in the ST movie series.

    6. Brazil

Well Ok it is good but I am kind of ticked that 12 Monkeys isn't on the list and I am guessing they picked one of these two because they did not want to give the same director two nods.

    7. ET

Ok whatever this is hoakie kiddie safe sci-fi by Spielberg, I really dislike it and don't think it belongs, maybe put it on some kidde movie list.

    8. Star Trek TNG TV Show

Yes TNG was a great extension on what was started in TOS but TOS was the ground breaker.

    9. Aliens

    Liked it and it belongs

    10. John Carpenter's The Thing

I like this one a bunch but not sure it belongs.

    11. Lost - TV Show

Never Liked it and am sure this doesn't belong

    12. Back to the Future

Um yeah OK I guess so.

    13. Terminator/Terminator 2

    First was great second OK.

    14. Children of Men

Excellent Thinking mans Sci-Fi, best SF movie since 12 Monkeys.

    15. Firefly/Serenity

Liked it but really top 20?

    16. Total Recall

Good concept and a cool movie.

    17. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Again cool movie and more a thinking mans sci-fi I would put this one with Being John Makovich and count it as one entry.

    18. Heroes - TV Show

Love the show a little disappointed with the season final but top 20 still not feeling it.

    19. Starship Troopers

Liked it but hell no on top 20.

    20. Star Wars: Clone Wars

Think Not SW ESB yes Clone wars not.

    21. Futurama - TV Show

Smart and funny, I guess I will let it slide.

    22. Quantum Leap - TV Show

    Good solid show

    23. Doctor Who - TV Show

Never really got into the good Dr but I will let it go as again there are trekie like people out ther over this show.

    24. Galaxy Quest

    Funny comedy top 25 NOT

    25. V: The miniseries(TV Show).

This one was pretty engaging at the time.

Now I know you guys are going to ask me what does deserve to be on this list since I panned much of it.

    12 Monkeys for one.

    Farscape
Stargate or at least the Series it led too.
    Star Trek TOS
    UFO (The 70s TV show)
    13th Floor
    Dark City (As Mentioned)
    Donnie Darko
    Star Wars and SW ESB
Close Encounters (If you must add a Speilberg Flick)
    Naked Lunch
    Bukaroo Bonzai
    The Philadelphia Experiment
Explorers (If you want a kiddie safe sci-fi)

There is lots of stuff you could get on this list.

GREAT post Max, but I disagree about the Matrix. I think the plot surpassed the effects. The original Matrix is much deeper than it appears IMO but it gets knocked simply for being popular.

For me the sequels kind of ruined the first one with me on The Matrix though I do still like seeing every now and then and will get it in HD eventually. Still I let it go though. :)

More for others that could be mentioned.....

    2001
    The Abyss
    Clockwork Orange
Men in Black is better then some of these.
    Strange Days
    The Time Machine (Original)
    The City of Lost Children
    Contact
The Fly (Original with Price or the new one with Goldblum)

For television, the two biggest omissions IMHO were

    Farscape
Babylon 5 - Better SF than just about anything else televised.

For film I can come up with plenty of other choices including (some previously listed), roughly in order of preference:

    Dark City
    Ghost In the Shell
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds
    Gattaca
Strange Days - thanks for reminding me, Max.
    Twelve Monkeys
    A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes)
    A Scanner Darkly
    Minority Report

    Definitely would cut

    ET - Ehhh.
The Thing - good film but not quite top 25 material
Lost - Maybe once the final revelations are made I could assess it better.
Back To The Future - Fun, but awful SF.
Starship Troopers - I like it, but once again not top 25 material.
V: The miniseries - At least it is in the 25th spot.

    Very happy to see

    Children of Men
    Brazil

    make the list.

BTW, the list is for the last 25 years which precludes some of the more obvious choices from the 1950s - 1970s.

    - Walter.

    Decent list all in all.

Here's my take on what belongs on a top 25 sci fi list of the last 25 years:

    1. The Matrix - Yes. Easily.
    2. Battlestar Galatica - TV Show - Don't know. Haven't seen it yet.
    3. Blade Runner - #1 in my book.
    4. X-Files - TV Show - No. Entertaining but hokey.
    5. Star Trek: Wrath of Khan - Yes.
    6. Brazil - Yes. Hell yes.
    7. ET - No. Too much for the kids in the end.
    8. Star Trek TNG TV Show - No. I was a fan somewhat but I still don't think it belongs on this list.
    9. Aliens - Yes.
    10. John Carpenter's The Thing - Yes. A personal Carpenter favorite of mine. I'm glad to see it on this list.
    11. Lost - TV Show - Haven't seen it yet.
    12. Back to the Future - Yes.
    13. Terminator/Terminator 2 - Yes to the original. No to number 2.
    14. Children of Men - No.
    15. Firefly/Serenity - Have not seen it.
    16. Total Recall - Yes.
    17. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Yes.
    18. Heroes - TV Show - Haven't seen it.
    19. Starship Troopers - Yes.
    20. Star Wars: Clone Wars - No.
    21. Futurama - TV Show - Haven't seen it.
    22. Quantum Leap - TV Show - No.
    23. Doctor Who - TV Show - No.
    24. Galaxy Quest - No, but damn close.
    25. V: The miniseries(TV Show). - No. I watched this recently as my wife was a fan and bought the DVD's. What a joke. I do remember this as a kid, but just vaguely as it didn't do much for me then, either.

Some movies I personally would like to see on a big list like this.

    Robocop
    Miracle Mile
    The Abyss, extended version.
    12 Monkeys
    The Fifth Element
    Dark City
    Donnie Darko

If you like good Sci Fi you owe it to yourself to watch these.

I agree with a lot of the alternates being suggested, particularly:

    Twelve Monkeys
    Dark City
    Gattaca
    Donnie Darko
    Minority Report

The Final Countdown. Actually I've got a copy of this at home but have yet to watch it. I saw this as a kid and it's a pretty good one.

I've definitely heard only great things about the Battlestar Galactia show. One day I'll pick up the series and start from the beginning.

I know very little about Firefly/Serenity.

    Seriously???!!

Personally I don't think that should even be in a top 100 of best sci-fi movies. It was beyond hokey...aweful acting, horrible overall story etc. No way IMO does it need to be in a top 25 list.

It's by Josh Whedon whose work includes the Buffy and Angel series.

In other words, interesting characters and witty dialog... oh did I mention interesting characters?

If you tell me next that it was aired on showtime and restricted for adult...themes...I'll go out and buy it right now.

FYI, Firefly is out on HD DVD and Battlestar Galactica is coming out on HD DVD later this year.

I am going to be buying BSG when it comes out.
