I'm still hoping we can remedy that.

LOL. And I sure as heck don't want to die in a black hole - - pink sounds far preferable. .

No worries Larry, I was just playin' but I'd love to come over and see what you're doing just the same.

Damn, with my proximity I'd be a gonner for sure without even being at his house

Larry,

The cable TV need not be in the same room with the gear. If the cable box is plugged into the same circuit that the equipment is on it could still produce the hum. Also (I think this is not the issue) if you have a subwoofer hooked up in the room...this is also another prime suspect.

I would disconnet the cable at the wall outlet and have a listen. No money spent and one thing eliminated from the list of possible culprits.

Mike:

I do have two cable bxes hooked up but they are in different rooms, on different circuits.

Barry:

It was absolutely my intention to have you over. The room treatments go in next week, and as I said above, the remaidner of the gear should arrive in a a month or so.

Larry,

Unplugging the cable boxes (the cable TV line, not the electricity) is like chicken soup.....it couldn't hurt.

For that to be true at least one component in the signal chain has to have its grounded outlet plugged into the wall intact.
There is a chance that the cable is polluting your AC if the circuits are connected (even if it is not directly connected to the system)

Try disconnecting the cable (at the coax wall jack) and see if the hum goes away.

If so you need a "hum buster".
Be advised that these can limit your digital HD bandwidth.

I'd go along with Saurav & others...lift the DAC ground.

Good luck. ON the room treatments....again!
Wooden Diffusors...Fiberglass absorbers...or
harmonic tuning devices?

True, and that's a good point. I'm assuming he's only planning on lifting one component, not all of them. And something else is probably connected with a 3-prong cable (although I'm not sure if that's a requirement).

Saurav:

Yup, I lifted the gorund with a 3-2 prong adaptor on the DAC; the amp is still connected via it's 3-prong plug.

The hum was similarly eliminated if I used the adaptor on the amp, but I figured it was safer to do so on the DAC.

Carl:

I'm using "traditional" room treatments, i.e., absorbers, diffusors and bass traps (though the latter are somwhat unusual; I will be writing about them soon). No Tice clocks and no mysterious little resonators - - a friend is the distributor for Frank Chang's resonatos and he would love for me to use them, but he admitted that my room sounds quite good as is; it should be considerably better when I'm through.
